We are pleased to invite you to attend the workshop “Biochar in forestry” 15-16 June 2022 at Kringler Gjestegård (www.kringler.no) near Oslo Airport Gardermoen, Norway.

The objective of the workshop is to exchange current updates of the research and development in this field within the Nordic-Baltic countries.

Background: Biochar is charred material formed by pyrolysis of organic materials and has a range of applications. In addition to improving soil physical and chemical properties and plant growth, biochar is a promising negative emission technology for storing carbon in soils, as it is very resistant to degradation. In forestry, biochar has been found to increase tree growth markedly in both pot experiments and, recently, also in young forest. Other studies have shown that biochar may be used as a growth medium in forest nurseries, potentially reducing the use of peat.

Topics for the workshop:

  • Biochar production methods and -facilities, feedstocks
  • Climate change mitigation effects and potential
  • Biochar properties and stability

        Effects of biochar on:

  • Forest and seedling growth
  • Soil carbon storage and soil respiration
  • Nutrient cycling and -leaching
  • Biodiversity

The workshop is open to scientists, students, managers, policy and decision-makers in the Nordic-Baltic countries. It will consist of invited lectures and scientific sessions with oral and poster presentations, and an excursion day 2 to Oplandske Bioenergy and their the newly opened biochar production plant in Ringsaker. There is a limit on the number of participants with physical attendance of ca. 40 people. It will be possible to follow the presentations on Wednesday on video link. Workshop language is English.
